Dignity debuted last summer with a fun new jack swing track and an even better b-side that recalled the best of late-second-gen group Block B, landing them on two of my year-end countdowns. But like many rookie groups from small agencies, they swiftly disappeared after that. Almost a year later, they’ve finally returned with new single SWEET2TH. Unfortunately, the song struggles to replicate their past glories.
I’ll never say no to a bright boy group track in K-pop, mostly because this style is often accompanied by strong melody. SWEET2TH boasts all the necessary energy for this concept but devolves into the kind of chant-heavy hook that instantly yanks me from a song’s momentum. This chorus is immediately followed by a more melodic segment, but even here the tune doesn’t stretch itself enough. This approach continues into the verses, including an energy-killing second verse shift. Overall, SWEET2TH is harmless fluff but will easily get lost among stronger releases and certainly pales in comparison to their debut.
