37-year-old Chinese actor Yu Menglong died on September 11 after suffering a fatal fall. Within just days of his death, investigators “ruled out any criminality,” raising the public’s suspicions. Since then, disturbing video and audio “evidence” has emerged, as well as an alleged autopsy report that reveals Yu’s graphic injuries. This, along with the lack of transparency from investigators, has fueled a global “Justice for Yu Menglong” movement that’s growing stronger by the day.

On the night of his death, Yu attended a gathering with over 10 people at a friend’s home. According to a statement from his mother, he fell to his death while intoxicated, but fans, legal experts, and even other celebrities have expressed doubts. Several stars, who were allegedly at the gathering, have now been accused of being involved in a murder plot. Yu’s agency is also under scrutiny because Yu is their ninth young artist to die tragically (or mysteriously vanish) since 2011.

On the global advocacy platform AVAAZA, fans launched a petition titled “Seeking Justice for Yu Menglong”. It has now racked up over 420,000 signatures from people who are calling for a transparent, independent investigation into Yu’s death.

The petition’s mission statement claims that audio and video footage, including a clip of Yu allegedly screaming before his death, suggest that foul play was involved. It also mentions claims that the actor was beaten, forced to drink, and forced to take drugs before he was brutally and intentionally killed.

The petition calls for the perpetrators’ immediate prosecution–if the proposed investigation results in criminal charges–as well as a public apology from the relevant authorities. It also calls for these authorities to provide legal and psychological support for Yu’s family.

Fans are also taking a stand in other ways in response to their posts, hashtags, and mentions of Yu Menglong’s name being wiped from online platforms. Some fans have reportedly started to use coded language and emojis to get around banned keywords, while others are referencing Yu with song lyrics instead of his name. Others are boldly defying the censorship with public displays.

In China, photos and videos of Yu have started to pop up in public spaces, with some playing on huge LED screens. One display reads, “I am Yu Menglong.”

In some electronic stores, fans have changed demo screens and smartphones to show images of Yu as both a protest and a tribute. Yu’s face has also been spotted on bus screens.
