Go Youn Jung is stepping into a new chapter of her acting career after officially joining the cast of the upcoming historical action film "Nambeol."
The casting was confirmed on July 7, with the actress set to star alongside veteran actor Lee Byung Hun in what will be her first major action role set in the Joseon Dynasty.
Directed by Lee Mo Gae, "Nambeol" follows nine warriors from different social classes who unite for a dangerous mission to Tsushima Island, AllKPop reported. Their goal is to rescue captives who have been abducted by Japanese pirates during the early years of the Joseon era.
Go Youn Jung will portray Ae Ryeong, a determined woman whose life is turned upside down after Japanese pirates attack her family. After losing her loved ones and seeing her younger sibling taken to Tsushima Island, she chooses to enter the battlefield herself.
Her character is described as independent, strong-willed, and unwilling to give up despite the hardships of the time.
Go Youn Jung Takes on Action Role
Lee Byung Hun will play Im Eok, the leader of the group of warriors. "Nambeol" also marks the first time the two actors will share the screen, giving audiences a fresh pairing to look forward to.
The physically demanding role is expected to reveal a different side of Go Youn Jung as she takes on intense action scenes while carrying the emotional weight of Ae Ryeong's journey.
The film is also significant for director Lee Mo Gae, who is making his feature directorial debut after building a respected career as a cinematographer.
According to ChosunBiz, he previously worked on acclaimed films including "12.12: The Day," "Exhuma," "Hunt," "Yadang: The Snitch," and "Emergency Declaration." His experience behind the camera has raised expectations that "Nambeol" will feature striking visuals and large-scale action sequences.
Production is being handled by Hive Media Corp, the studio behind successful titles such as "12.12: The Day," "Harbin," "Deliver Us from Evil," "The Man Standing Next," and "Inside Men."
"Nambeol" is currently in pre-production, with principal photography scheduled to begin in the second half of this year.
