Since his debut with VIXX in 2012, KEN has established himself as one of K-pop’s most distinctive vocalists. It’s a release that reflects not only his growth but also his ability to reimagine beloved songs in a way that feels both timeless and new.

In our exclusive interview, KEN shares the story behind [RE:BORN], the creative choices that shaped it, and how this project reflects his evolution as a soloist. He also opens up about the emotions that guide his music, the inspirations he draws from daily life, and the messages he hopes to deliver to fans through every note.

Hellokpop: Hi KEN, it’s nice to meet you. For readers who may know you from VIXX or your solo activities, how would you introduce yourself as an artist today, and what do you hope new listeners take away from your music?

KEN: Hello, I’m KEN—main vocalist and the playful member of VIXX. As a solo artist, I aim to deliver my emotions through song, and as a musical actor, I strive to connect with audiences through performance. Ultimately, I hope to become a sincere, well-rounded entertainer who moves people in many ways. HKP: Congratulations on the release of your KiTAlbum [RE:BORN]! Can you share what the title means to you personally and why you felt “rebirth” was the right theme for this album?
KiTAlbum [RE:BORN] 발매를 축하드립니다! 이번 앨범 제목이 개인적으로 켄님께 어떤 의미가 있는지, 그리고 왜 “재탄생(Rebirth)”이라는 주제가 이번 앨범에 적합하다고 느끼셨는지 말씀해 주실 수 있을까요?

KEN: The word REBORN carries meanings of “being born again,” “revival,” and “a new beginning.” Like the lyrics of the title track “A Flying Butterfly,” I approached this album with the mindset of starting fresh—going through the stages of caterpillar, chrysalis, and finally becoming a butterfly. That process of transformation felt perfectly suited to the theme of this album.
REBORN이라는 말은 ‘다시 태어난’, ‘부활’이라는 뜻도 있고, 또 ‘새로운 시작’이라는 뜻도 있다고 합니다. 타이틀 곡 ‘나는 나비’의 가사처럼 저도 새로 시작하는 마음으로, 애벌레, 번데기의 시간, 그리고 나비가 되어가는 과정을 겪는 마음으로 이번 앨범을 준비했기 때문에 적합하다고 생각했습니다.

HKP: [RE:BORN] features reinterpretations of YB’s “A Flying Butterfly” and Jin Minho’s “Heart.” What drew you to these two songs in particular, and how did you approach making them your own?
[RE:BORN]에는 YB의 *“나는 나비”*와 진민호의 *“마음”*가 켄님만의 스타일로 재해석되어 수록되었습니다. 특히 이 두 곡을 선택하게 된 계기와, 곡을 자신만의 색으로 소화하기 위해 어떤 접근을 하셨는지 궁금합니다.

KEN: Early in my career, I felt like a caterpillar—small, inexperienced, and still growing. Now, after years of challenges and development, I felt ready to emerge like a butterfly. That’s why I chose “A Flying Butterfly”—I wanted listeners to see my growth and think, “This is how KEN has evolved as an artist.” Through this song, I wanted to show recognition of my past journey while also expressing my desire to soar freely into the future.
데뷔초의 저는 애벌레였다고 생각을 하구요.. 그래서 지금까지의 성장 과정을 지나 이제 저도 화려한 나비가 될 수 있지 않을까.. 라는 생각을 했던 것 같아요. 많은 분들이 지금의 저를 보고, 혹은 저를 찾아보시고, ‘아, 켄이라는 가수가 이렇게 성장해 왔구나’라고 생각해주셨으면 하는 마음에 ‘나는 나비’를 선택하게 되었습니다. 그리고 저의 새로운 모습을 통해 그 동안의 과정을 인정받고, 또 나비처럼 훨훨 날아오르고 싶은 마음이 컸던 것 같아요!

When recording, I thought about people preparing to step into society for the first time, or those facing new challenges. I tried to capture their anticipation and struggles, expressing both the child who dreams of spreading their wings and the one who finally achieves those dreams.
그래서 이 곡을 녹음할 때 아직 이 큰 사회에 나올 준비를 하고 있는, 혹은 사회 초년생들의 새로운 시작/도전을 향한 마음으로 접근해서 감정을 표현했어요. 또 후렴구에서는 꿈을 펼치고 싶어하는 아이, 드디어 꿈과 목표를 이룬 아이의 모습을 표현했습니다.

As for “Heart,” the first time I heard it, I cried. The emotions struck me so deeply that I knew I wanted to share its comforting message through my own voice. I kept the arrangement very simple—just acoustic guitar—so the feelings could come across as if I were speaking directly to someone. My goal was to preserve the original emotion while allowing my own voice and sincerity to shine through.
마음이라는 곡은… 제가 이 곡을 듣고 펑펑 울었어요. 그냥 눈물이 나더라구요. 노래를 들으면서 저도 굉장히 많은 위로를 받았고, 또 원곡자인 진민호 선배님의 감정이 너무 와닿아서 이 곡의 느낌을 저의 목소리로, 감정으로 전달해보고 싶다는 생각을 해서 정하게 되었습니다. 그리고 이 곡은 곡 자체가 주는 감정과 힘이 있어서, 그 감정을 그대로 보여주고 싶었어요. 원곡보다 더 잔잔하게 편곡을 해서.. 뭔가 제 속마음을 얘기하듯 표현했구요! 또 저의 목소리에 집중할 수 있도록 악기도 통기타 하나만 사용해서 최대한 제 감정 그대로를 보여주게 하기 위해 노력했습니다.

HKP: You gave “A Flying Butterfly” a slightly faster tempo with a refreshing tone. What emotions or imagery did you want listeners to feel when hearing your version?
“A Flying Butterfly”*는 약간 빠른 템포와 상큼한 느낌으로 새롭게 편곡되었습니다. 켄님의 버전을 듣는 사람들이 어떤 감정이나 이미지를 느끼길 바라셨나요?

KEN: I didn’t want the journey from caterpillar to butterfly to feel too heavy or exhausting. That’s why I arranged it with a quicker tempo, adding brightness. Like the lyrics say, the butterfly eventually spreads its wings and flies. I wanted the song to give hope and comfort to anyone still enduring their own chrysalis stage. My wish is for this album to serve as a reminder that dreams—whether long-held or yet to be realized—can take flight, opening a second chapter in life.
애벌레에서 번데기, 나비가 되기까지 고된 여정이 너무 힘들다는 느낌이 들지 않게 표현 하고 싶었어요. 그래서 원곡보다 좀 더 빠른 템포로 편곡을 했구요. 노래 가사처럼 결국 날개를 펼쳐 날아간다는 희망을 통해서, 아직 애벌레 혹은 번데기의 과정속에서 힘듦을 견디고 있는 분들에게 이 곡이 위로가 됐으면 좋겠습니다! 그리고 ”다시 태어나다, 새로운 시작“이라는 의미의 RE:BORN 처럼 이루고 싶었던 꿈, 혹은 이루지 못했던 꿈을 꼭! 이루셔서, 인생 2막이 펼쳐지는 계기를 줄 수 있는 앨범이 됐으면 좋겠습니다!

HKP: “Heart” is arranged solely with acoustic guitar—your first time working in this stripped-down style. How did it feel to sing in such an intimate setting, and what new sides of yourself as a vocalist did you discover?
“Heart”*는 어쿠스틱 기타만으로 편곡된 곡으로, 켄님이 처음 도전하는 단출한 스타일입니다. 이렇게 친밀한 환경에서 노래를 부르는 느낌은 어땠으며, 보컬리스트로서 새롭게 발견한 자신만의 매력이 있었나요?

KEN: It was my first time recording a song with just an acoustic guitar, so I worried whether my voice would suit it. But as I sang, I discovered that I could deliver a gentler, conversational tone, almost like whispering, and still reach listeners. It showed me that my voice could carry warmth and intimacy even in such a bare arrangement.
이렇게 통기타 하나만 사용해서 작업한 곡은 처음이었어요. 그래서 내가 이 곡과 어울리는 목소리를 잘 표현 할 수 있을까 걱정도 좀 했지만. 녹음을 하면서 ‘아, 내가 이렇게 조곤조곤 말하듯이 노래를 부르는 것도 가능하구나’ 알게 고, 또 ’속삭이듯이 노래를 부르면서 이 목소리도 좋아해주시는 분들이 있을 수 있겠다.. 라고 생각을 했던 것 같아요.

HKP: When reinterpreting beloved songs, there’s always a balance between honoring the original and adding your own color. How did you find that balance while working on this project?
사랑받는 곡을 재해석할 때는 원곡을 존중하면서도 자신만의 색을 더하는 균형이 중요한데, 이번 프로젝트에서는 그 균형을 어떻게 찾으셨나요?

KEN: I thought a lot about what Yoon Do Hyun and Jin Minho must have felt when they first sang these songs—their thoughts, emotions, even their breathing. I imagined how they might have approached the songs in their twenties. By understanding their original intentions, I was able to honor their emotions while layering my own voice and interpretation on top.
윤도현 선배님과 진민호 선배님이 원곡을 어떤 마음으로 부르셨을까.. 또 어떤 생각과 감정으로 부르셨을까.. 어떤 호흡으로 가지고 가셨을까.. 정말 많은 생각을 했던 것 같아요. 또 두 선배님들께서 20대 때에 그 곡을 부르셨다면 어떤 느낌이었을까? 라는 생각도 하면서 곡을 해석해 봤습니다. 그래서 두 선배님들께서 원곡을 부르셨을때의 마음, 감정을 이해하려고 노력했고, 최대한 거기에 저의 목소리를 담아야겠다고 생각했습니다.

HKP: Both songs in [RE:BORN] carry deep emotional weight. Were there particular moments in your own life that helped you connect with the lyrics and deliver them sincerely?
[RE:BORN]에 수록된 두 곡 모두 깊은 감정을 담고 있습니다. 개인적인 삶의 순간 중, 가사와 연결되어 진심을 담아 전달할 수 있었던 특별한 경험이 있었나요?

KEN: “A Flying Butterfly” reminded me of my trainee and debut days. I didn’t train for long, so when I debuted, I was filled with uncertainty and anxiety. I realized those feelings mirrored the caterpillar and chrysalis stage, so I recorded the song while thinking of that time. On the other hand, “Heart” reflects the feelings of standing on stage alone during my solo activities. It made me think of my journey toward independence, so I sang it with that experience in mind.
나는 나비는 제가 데뷔하면서 부터의 모습을 많이 생각하게 한 노래인 것 같아요. 연습생 생활을 짧게 하고 데뷔를 해서 어렸을때는 늘 불안하고 걱정되는 마음이 컸는데, 데뷔하고 활동을 하면서 느꼈던 순간들이 이 곡에서 ‘애벌레와 번데기의 나구나’ 라는 생각을 했어요. 그래서 데뷔 초 제가 활동했던 모습을 떠올리면서 녹음을 했습니다. 마음은 멤버들 없이 솔로 활동을 할 때의 느낌을 보여주는 곡인 것 같아서 홀로서기 하면서 혼자 활동하고 있는 지금 저의 모습을 떠올리며 녹음을 했습니다.

HKP: This album also reflects a more mature version of you as an artist. Looking back on your solo debut with Greeting in 2020 and your journey since then, how do you feel you’ve grown as a singer?
이번 앨범은 켄님이 한층 성숙한 아티스트로 성장했음을 보여주기도 합니다. 2020년 Greeting으로 솔로 데뷔를 했을 때와 지금까지의 여정을 돌아볼 때, 가수로서 얼마나 성장했다고 느끼시나요?

KEN: Honestly, I think I’ve grown a lot! (laughs) In 2020, when I debuted as a soloist with Greeting, even singing a single song alone on stage felt overwhelming. Compared to then, I’ve grown so much. Now I can perform over twenty songs in a solo concert, and I’ve built the confidence to share the stage with large festival crowds, enjoying the moment together. That growth makes me proud and grateful.
정~~~~말 많이 성장했다고 생각해요ㅋㅋㅋㅋ 2020년 ‘인사’로 첫 솔로 데뷔를 했을 때만 생각해도.. 저의 첫 솔로 데뷔다 보니 무대에서 혼자 한곡을 완곡 하는것도 부담이 컸었고, 그 때와 비교하면 지금은 정말 많이 성장했다! 라고 생각합니다ㅋㅋㅋ 이제 지금은 솔로 콘서트를 하면서 혼자 20곡 이상을 소화하기도 하고, 또 제가 요즘 여러 페스티벌에서 무대에 참여했는데요! 많은 관객들 앞에서 그들과 호흡하고 함께 무대를 즐기는 모습을 보여줄 수 있는 자신감을 갖게 된 것 같아서! 정말 많은 성장을 했다고 느낍니다.

HKP: You’ve worked in many genres—ballads, pop, OSTs, and now rock and folk influences with this album. Do you find yourself drawn to a specific style, or do you enjoy the challenge of adapting your voice to many different sounds?
그동안 발라드, 팝, OST 등 다양한 장르를 경험하셨는데, 이번 앨범에서 보여준 락과 포크/발라드 스타일도 포함하여, 특정 장르에 끌리는 편이신가요, 아니면 다양한 장르에 도전하며 목소리를 변화시키는 것을 즐기시나요?

KEN: It can be difficult to shift my vocal style for each song, but I’ve found it fun and rewarding. By trying different genres, I’m learning which types of music suit me best and discovering the sounds I want to pursue. Lately, I’ve been enjoying experimenting with subtle changes in my voice and gradually finding a sound that feels uniquely mine.
최근에 이렇게 곡마다 목소리를 바꾸면서 노래를 하는게 너무 어렵지만 재밌었구요! 그리고 여러 장르의 음악에 도전하면서 저에게 잘 어울리는 음악이 무엇인지, 제가 하고 싶은 음악이 무엇인지를 찾아가는 과정도 느끼는 중입니다. 그래서 요즘 목소리를 조금씩 다르게 변화시키면서 저만의 소리를 발견해가는 과정을 즐기고 있습니다.

HKP: Fans often say your voice has a healing quality. What do you personally hope they take away emotionally after listening to [RE:BORN]?
팬들은 켄님의 목소리를 ‘힐링’이라고 표현하곤 합니다. 켄님 개인적으로 [RE:BORN]을 들은 후 팬들이 어떤 감정을 느끼길 바라시나요?

KEN: I don’t think I’ve ever said this before, but every time I sing, I carry feelings of gratitude toward my fans. Their love and support are the reason I’m able to stand here today. I hope that sense of thankfulness reaches them through my music. Even if it doesn’t, I’ll continue singing with that emotion in my heart until it does.
이런 말을 처음 하는 거긴 한데, 항상 노래를 부를때마다 팬들에게 감사하다는 감정을 안고 부르는 편입니다. 저를 사랑해주고, 응원해주는 팬들 덕분에 제가 지금 이 자리에 있을 수 있으니까요. 그 소중한 감정을 항상 간직하면서 노래를 부르는데, 이 ‘감사함‘ 이라는 저의 감정과 마음이 팬들에게 닿았으면 좋겠습니다. 그치만 만약 이 감정이 팬들에게 전달되지 않더라도 저는 끝까지 담아낼 생각입니다! 헤헷.

HKP: During the preparation of this album, was there a specific memory from the recording process that stood out to you as especially meaningful?
이번 앨범 준비 과정 중, 녹음하면서 특히 기억에 남는 특별한 순간이 있었나요?

KEN: Yes, my childhood friend YOONSEOK, who also composed some of my earlier songs like “LOVE DAY,” “To You,” and “Make Me Strong,” directed the recording for this album. Because he’s known me for so long, he understood exactly how I want to communicate with fans. His guidance helped me capture the emotions and messages I truly wanted to deliver, and that was a very meaningful experience.
저의 곡 중LOVE DAY, 너에게, Make Me Strong을 작곡한 작곡가이자, 저의 어릴적 친구 윤석(YOONSEOK)이가 이번 RE:BONE 앨범 녹음 디렉팅을 봐줬는데요! 윤석(YOONSEOK)이는 저와 어린시절부터 함께 지내오면서 제가 팬들을 대하는 자세, 생각, 전하고픈 메시지를 너무 잘 알고 있기 때문에 제가 팬들에게 전달하고 싶은 감정과 메시지를 잘 표현할 수 있게 도와준 게 생각이 납니다!

HKP: If you could describe [RE:BORN] as a color, season, or even a food, what would it be and why?
[RE:BORN]을 색깔, 계절, 혹은 음식으로 표현한다면 무엇이 될 것 같고, 그 이유는 무엇인가요?

KEN: Yellow and green. I love yellow, and it perfectly matches the bright, refreshing feeling of “A Flying Butterfly.” For “Heart,” I think of green because green brings a sense of calm and peace, which reflects the song’s mood.
노란색과 초록색입니다. 제가 노란색을 좋아하기도 하고, ‘나는 나비’의 밝고 청량한 느낌이 노란색과 너무 잘 어울려서 선택했습니다! 그리고 마음이란 곡은 왠지 초록색이 떠오르는 것 같아요. 초록색을 보면 마음이 편안해지는 것 같아서, 가장 잘 표현해주는 색이라고 생각했습니다.

HKP: When you’re not recording or performing, what inspires you creatively? Do books, films, or daily experiences influence the way you approach music?
음악 활동 외에, 켄님에게 창작적 영감을 주는 요소는 무엇인가요? 책, 영화, 혹은 일상 속 경험이 음악적 접근 방식에 영향을 미치나요?

KEN: I learn a lot about emotion from watching dramas. Sometimes memories from everyday life resurface unexpectedly and inspire me in new ways. Even the daily stories fans share with me often shape how I express emotions in recordings. Inspiration really comes from many different places.
드라마를 보면서 감정표현을 많이 배우고 느끼는 것 같아요. 또 일상생활의 기억들에 저도 모르게 영감을 얻기도 하구요. 그리고 이전에 스쳐지나간 소중한 순간들이 갑자기 떠올라서 그게 새롭게 느껴지고 감정으로 표현되기도 하는 것 같습니다. 또 팬들이 보내주는 일상 이야기를 읽으면서 그 기분과 생각이 녹음할 때 감정표현으로 보여지기도 해서 정말 여러가지 상황에서 영감을 얻는 것 같습니닷!

HKP: Finally, what message would you like to share with your fans who are about to listen to [RE:BORN] for the first time?
마지막으로, 이번 앨범 [RE:BORN]을 듣는 팬들에게 전하고 싶은 메시지는 무엇인가요?

KEN: Can I always stay by your side? Through my voice, whether on stage or off, I want to be a source of strength. Even if you can’t come see me, I’ll come find you. Until then, please listen to these songs knowing that we are always connected.
항상 옆에 있어 줘도 될까요~? 저의 목소리로 무대위에서, 무대 아래에서 언제나 힘이 되고 싶습니다. 언제 어디서든 항상 옆에 있다는 생각으로 노래할 테니까요! 혹여나 저를 보러 오지 못하더라도 제가 꼭! 만나러 갈 테니까! 그때까지 늘 함께 한다는 생각으로 이 노래를 들어주면 좋겠습니다.
