When talking about prominent 5th-gen K-Pop groups, ZEROBASEONE is certainly at the top of the list. As a project boy group formed under the Mnet audition program “BOYS PLANET”, ZEROBASEONE has been making history in the K-Pop industry since their debut in 2023. Not only did they become the first K-Pop group to achieve million-seller status with their debut album, with all their succeeding albums recording over 1 million sales, ZEROBASEONE is also the seventh group in K-Pop history to achieve the “Rookie Grand Slam” by winning all the major rookie awards at Korean award ceremonies in 2023-2024. All these impressive accomplishments prove ZEROBASEONE’s position as one of the most successful 5th-gen K-Pop groups.
Time flies, and July 10 marks the 2nd anniversary of ZEROBASEONE’s debut. Throughout the past two years, ZEROBASEONE has released lots of amazing discography with different concepts and genres. From powerful EDMs, refreshing R&B, to emotional ballads, capturing ZEROSE’s hearts with their versatile music style. As we celebrate this important milestone of the group, let’s check out 5 ZEROBASEONE’s B-side tracks from each of their Korean albums that showcase their diverse colors!
1. New Kidz on the Block
As a lighthearted dance-pop track featured in ZEROBASEONE’s debut album ‘Youth in the Shade’, “New Kidz on the Block” declares the members’ bold ambition to rise to the top, singing that they will throw away their worries and pursue their dreams. The energetic choreography and lively rap by Kim GyuVin and Seok Matthew bring out the playful and groovy vibe of the song. Not to mention that Kim TaeRae’s solo dance in the bridge part is so cute, and many ZEROSE are surprised to see how much his dancing skills have improved! This song truly embodies the teenage charm of ZEROBASEONE and their dream to the stardom as a rookie group.
2. MELTING POINT
“MELTING POINT” is a sweet jersey club song that brings warmth to ZEROSE in winter by portraying the thrilling and magical feeling of falling in love. The synth arrangements throughout the song radiate a dreamy and warm vibe and give it a festive touch. The lyrics also accentuate the fluttering emotion of teenage boys in a cute way by repeating “blush”, “hush”, and “rush” in the chorus. The members are transformed into winter princes in the music video (How can one not fall for prince-concept Ricky? He looks so charming standing beside the white horse!), and the members look extra adorable wearing fluffy outfits during this live stage!
3. SWEAT
“SWEAT” is an upbeat dance-pop that illustrates a joyful moment of the members dancing with their loved ones under the blazing summer sun. The song is infused with intense house beats and synth melodies, which capture the heat and energy of summer, and the members dancing in rain-soaked summer scenes in the music video bring out the youthful charm of ZEROBASEONE. Choi YoungJun, who was one of the dance tutors in “BOYS PLANET”, choreographed this song, which the dynamic dance brings out the youthful and energetic energy of this summer track. Despite being a pre-released track, “SWEAT” made it into the Top 20 Songs of the Year (Overseas) at the 2024 Asian Pop Music Awards, proving the popularity of this song.
4. Eternity
“Eternity” is a heartfelt pop-ballad song dedicated to ZEROSE, which is about the members choosing to believe in eternity even though they know it is just a sweet lie because they are sharing beautiful memories with their special ones (ZEROSE). The members also promise ZEROSE that they will treasure the brilliant present moment, as it may not come back again. The soft acoustic guitar arrangements of the song create a dreamy and emotional feeling, and the soothing melody highlights the warm and harmonious vocals of the members, together bringing out the poetic color of the song. Many ZEROSE are touched by this sincere love letter from ZEROBASEONE, saying that they can feel how genuine their love towards their fans is despite being a project boy group.
5. Devil Game
ZEROBASEONE demonstrates refreshing and youthful concepts in most of their songs, but “Devil Game” showcases the sexy and mature side of the group. This is an electrifying early 2000s dance-pop-inspired track that describes the members falling for the irresistible charm of their crush and their strong desire to win her heart, likening this feeling to a hide-and-seek game with the devil. The addictive synth bass and drum beats give out a mysterious and tense vibe, and Kim GyuVin and Kim JiWoong’s rap with their deep voices express the evil and tempting concept perfectly. Also, the duo dance break by Han YuJin and Sung HanBin is truly the highlight of the song. Their seductive dance moves and facial expressions are so captivating, and their alluring interactions make ZEROSE’s hearts skip a beat!
